Robert McMullen was born in Perth 10 December 1947, and educated at Governor Stirling High School and the University of Western Australia. He studied Economics and the Arts. He was active in the movement against the Vietnam War. He was Secretary of the Conscientious Objectors Advisory Committee (WA). He applied for and was granted full exemption from military service as a conscientious objector. His hearing was on 27 June 1968 at the Perth Court of Petty sessions before Magistrate FEA Bateman. The magistrate reserved his decision until 18 July 1968. In 1973 Robert (Bob) joined the Australian Labor Party and was elected to the Commonwealth Parliament. He retired in 2010.
