The Revd. Dr. Hughes was born in New Zealand. Trained for ministry in the Baptist Church in the United States of America. Ministry in Queensland. On Thursday 3 January 1918 at the monthly of the Rockhampton Baptist Church, pastor Revd., Dr. JG Hughes disposed of being chairperson and sanctioned for his support of the NO vote of the conscription plebiscite, including the charge that he was advising church members ho to vote. He was given 3 months’ notice of termination of his pastorate. The meeting was rowdy, fractious and a desecration of the house of God. Dr Hughes believed the actions of the meeting were intolerant and unconstitutional.
