Further Information:
Joseph Philip Hancox of Alderley, Brisbane was a Baptist Lay Preacher and had ministered in about 25 Baptist churches in Brisbane. In a court, on Monday 15 February 1943, he was sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment. This was because he refused to take the oath or make an affirmation, for service in the defence forces. Phil told Magistrate GA Cameron that his religious beliefs would not permit him to undertake either combatant or non-combatant military duties. The magistrate told Phil that, he was a very misguided young man. This is God’s war for the freedom of the world and to wipe out the tyranny of our oppressors. Phil subsequently wrote a book titled Cavalry or calvary? – the Christians dilemma: an autobiography. 1984. QLD: West End.
Phil may be the same person as Paul Hancox who is listed on the Honour Roll.
