Further Information: F M Pereira was a member of the International Bible Students Association and a devout Christian. When his application for total exemption from military service was rejected, he refused to enlist. During his 14-day sentence in Adelaide Jail, he wore prison clothes and performed hard labour for eight-and-a-half hours a day during the week. He was locked in his cell for most of each weekend. Most of his meals consisted of dry black bread and water. Although permitted to keep his Bible, he had no light to read by except what came through a small hole in his cell door.
