Rodney Troy was from Western Australia and a member of the Jehovah’s Witness (JW). On the basis of his religious beliefs, he applied for total exemption from military duties as a conscientious objector under the National Service Act1951. His court hearing was on 10 October 1953 at the Perth Magistrates Court, before Magistrate Taylor. Another JW, Youngman was heard at the same time. When asked if Jehovah’s Witness could serve in the Medical Corps, Rodney replied, that they regarded the Medical column as one of the five columns of war; they could learn first aid in civil life. The application was granted.
