Further Information:
Ronald Waddy was from Western Australia. He was a Quaker, and as a member of that historic peace church could have expected he be exempted from all military duties. His application for total exemption was dismissed and he was granted exemption from combatant duties only. He appeared at the Police Court in Perth during August 1951, where he was assigned to the ambulance corps. He was opposed to any association with the military, but the National Service Act 1951 lacked a right of appeal to a higher court, at this time. Ronald opted for conscientious non-compliance with the Act. He refused to register and refused to obey a call-up notice. On 1 July 1952 at the Perth Police Court he was fined £10 for refusing to register and sentenced to military detention for refusing to enlist.
