Colin Haggarty was from Rockhampton in Queensland and was a farm worker by trade. He was a non-denominational Christian. As such he applied for total exemption from military duties. His case was heard in the Court of Petty Sessions in Brisbane. The magistrate dismissed the application. Colin appealed to the Supreme Court of Queensland. The case was heard by Judge J Sheery on 27 June 1953, and the appeal was dismissed. He was sent to Holsworthy Military Prison to serve a term of at least 176 days which was equal to the military training required of 18 year olds under the National Service Act 1951. He was expected to be released from Holsworthy in early 1935. It was reported that concientious objectors were well-treated at the facility.
