James Aussel was a 22-year-old from Griffith, a suburb of Canberra, He was a Fitter and Machinist by trade. He was a Christian which form the grounds for his application for full exemption from all military duties under the National Service Act 1951. At the Court of Petty Sessions in Canberra, Magistrate RA McKillop granted him exemption from combatant military duties only.
