Alfred O’Connor was a conscientious objector during the second world war. His conscientious objection was based on his religion as a Quaker. He was an active member of the Labor Party and the Melbourne Quaker Peace Committee. He was a solicitor in later life and devoted most of his time to representing conscientious objectors at court hearings during the Vietnam War period, one of which was Geoffrey A Sandy. Alfred was a first-class runner, and it was whilst doing his usual morning run, on 28 September 1970, that he collapsed and died. He was described as a man of great personal integrity and honesty, whose loss will be felt both personally and professionally.
