David Martin was from Taringa in Queensland, He was a Chemical Engineer. As a Quaker he was a Christian pacifist and opposed to military service. As such he would have probably gained full exemption from military service had he applied as a conscientious objector. Instead, he chose non-compliance with the National Service Act 1964 (NSA 1964). He refused to register for military service and on 16 April 1971 Magistrate Lee convicted him and fined him and jailed him for 7 days.
