Ian Howard was from Strathmore a suburb of Melbourne. He had been rejected after one year at university and was employed by the Commonwealth Department of Immigration. He made application for full exemption from military service. He stated that, “war is wrong under all circumstances; it proves nothing, just wastes lives”. On his application form which was lodged on 24 August 1966 he had stated: “Every member of the Armed Forces is to my mind a murderer.”. Magistrate Bennett at the hearing on 29 September 1966 refused the application. Ian was not represented at the hearing and did not bring any witnesses. He appeared the same day before Bennett as had Christopher Nelms and Ian McDonald. It is unknown if he appealed or adopted non-compliance
