Barry Hayden was a 20-year-old from East Coburg a suburb of Melbourne. He was already a conscript in the army when he applied for full exemption from military service. He told Magistrate E Elvish on 6 August 1965 that he was unable to fire a rifle. The magistrate dismissed his application and told Barry to apply for a job in the army which did not require him to fire a rifle. It is unknown if Barry appealed the decision.
