Richard Gubbings was a 20-year-old from East Hawthorn in Victoria. He stated that he was an agnostic but was a former member of the Church of England. He said, “it is to be beyond his moral and conscientious ability to bear arms. He was not trying to evade military duty and was prepared to serve in non-combatant duties”. He made application during 1965 for exemption from combatant military duties. The magistrate EL Ross granted Richard exemption from combatant duties on 10 June 1965.
