James Godfrey was from Chadstone a suburb of Melbourne. He was a member of the Radio Church of God, although he declined to describe himself as a Christian. He applied for full exemption from military duties. The court hearing was heard by Magistrate Hudspeth who did not grant the application. It is unknown if he appealed the decision.
