Jeremy Gilling was an Economics Student and Arts Graduate from New South Wales. He informed the Ministerthat he was not going to register under the National Service Act for the January 1969 intake. He was convicted of that offence on 9 December and fined $40 plus $17 costs or 29 days in jail in lieu of non-payment. Jeremy did not attend court. He did not pay the fine and was arrested and spent 29 days in jail. A warrant was issued to enbale police to bring him to court. Jeremy refused to attend the mandatory medical examination. The court on 12 May 1969, ruled that if he failed to do so a second time he will be immediately jailed for 7 days in addition to the requirement to pay the original fine for non-registration. He was summonsed to court again and did not appear. He was arrested on 20 August 1969 and remanded on bail so he could complete his University exams. He was convicted on 28 November 1969 and was again fined $40 plus $17 costs or 29 days jail in lieu of payment plus 7 days jail. This fine was paid. Jeremy applied for full exemption from military duties as a conscientious objector. It was not granted. A second application was granted by Magistrate BT Irwin of the Sydney Magistrates Court on 30 November 1971.
