Richard Coughlin was a 23 year-old school teacher from Burwood in Victoria. He taught at Lyndale High School. He applied for full exemption from military duties on the grounds of his religious pacifism. His hearing was in Melbourne 27 June 1968 before Magistrate CE Elvish. He was granted full exemption from military duties and registered as a conscientious objector.
