Further Information:
Stanislas Van de Veil was a 20-year-old from West Footscray in Victoria. He applied for full exemption from military service. His family migrated from Holland in 1949. At the court hearing on 7 June 1965, he informed that court he had an abhorrence of firearms. This was because at age 15 he had accidentally blinded his brother in an eye with a air gun. He also stated that his father had been a conscientious objector in Holland. His application was dismissed. He appealed the decision and in early November 1965 Judge Mitchell dismissed the appeal but exempted Stanislas from combatant duties only. The Judge stated that blinding his brother in the eye with an air gun was not relevant to court hearing. He complied and undertook the mandatory medical examination. He was rejected on medical grounds and so was not called-up for military service.
