Douglas Smalley was Clerk from West Footscray in Victoria. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church but said he had not discussed his pacifist views with anyone form the church. He told Magistrate Murray, that, “he cannot think of any circumstances under which he would kill”. The magistrate granted full exemption from military service as a conscientious objector. Douglas was one of the first six conscientious objection court hearings. He shared with John Lacona and Paul Waite.
