Russell Madigan was a 20-year-old from Fitzroy a suburb of Melbourne. He was a Duct Fitter by trade. He applied for full exemption from military service. His hearing was on 16 May 1968 at the Russell Street Court of Petty Sessions before Magistrate D Scully. He told the magistrate that he had a conscientious belief against serving in any form of military service. He said, “that he could not conceive of a situation where he would join an armed force to fight an aggressor”. Magistrate Scully granted Russell full exemption from military service as a conscientious objector.
