Denys Carroll was from Hawthorn in South Australia. He applied for and was granted full exemption from military duties as a conscientious objector by magistrate VC Matison at the hearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court. He was a Christian pacifist and the grandson of the Anglican Bishop JS Moyes of the Diocese of New England centered on Armidale, New South Wales.
