Stephen Carle was from Chelsea in Victoria and was aged 23 years. He worked as a printer. He applied for and was granted full exemption from military duties by Magistrate P Monkhurst in the Melbourne Court of Petty Sessions on 13 December 1968. He described himself as an atheist, by one who had an instinctive belief that human life was supreme. He stated he could not be a party to taking human life.
