Ian Cannell was from Niddrie in Victoria. He was 22 years old and worked as metallurgist. He applied for full exemption from military duties on the grounds of conscious objection. His hearing was in the Melbourne Court of Petty sessions before Magistrate WM Murray on 5 July 1968. Ian told the court, “In considering this matter I have found the influence of home life and Christian up-bringing has caused me to take a stand in life that does not permit me to take a part in any form of military service or in the military machine”. He said that his personal view was that it was wrong to serve even in a civilian capacity in time of war. Further he stated, I don’t think this is what the teachings of Christ meant us to do”
