Further Information:
Ted Hartley was a member of the Congregational Church, the Boy Scouts and such peace groups as Australian Peace Pledge Union (NSW) where he served as Secretary and Newsletter Editor, and the NSW Conscientious Objectors Group. His reasons for refusing to enlist were both religious and humanitarian. During his first imprisonment, served in Long Bay, Hartley endured solitary confinement because he refused to do war work while in prison. In his second term, he was sent firstly to Goulburn Jail and then to the Tumbarumba Forestry Camp, where several other objectors worked.
