Further Information:

 John Landau registered for National Service but refused to attend the mandatory medical examination. Later he agreed to do so. He was   subsequently called-up but he refused to obey.  He was then declared medically unfit. He travelled to New York for   an operation on his eyes to save his sight. His call-up to the army was dismissed.
