Edmund Denford, a farmer at Lismore, NSW, was married with children. As a Christadelphian, he objected to enlisting for military service. On 24 June 1942, he applied for exemption on religious grounds. At his first court hearing at Lismore on 14 August 1942, Denford was ordered to perform non-combatant duties. He refused. On 2 November 1942, Denford again appeared in the Lismore Court charged with failure to take the oath or affirmation of service. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
