M.A. Coote had taken the oath of military service at age 18, believing that as a student, studying for a Bachelor of Science at Adelaide University, he would be reserved. The military authorities took no action after he failed to perform fatigue duty and granted him leave without pay from 17 to 26 June 1944. On 8 August 1944, Manpower Services stated that Coote must be available for military service. He did not appeal as he wished to avoid publicity.
