Andrew Augustine was a member of the New Testament Church, and of the Goodwill Service Community, a pacifist community in Fitzroy in inner Melbourne, where several conscientious objectors found support. In early 1941, he signed a petition addressed the Attorney-General, W.M. Hughes, requesting alternatives of civilian service for men who refused to undertake military service. The day after his conviction, Augustine received a summons from the army to report again and take the oath. The outcome is unknown.
