David Allen was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers), the Australian Peace Pledge Union, and the Conscientious Objectors’ Central Committee, NSW, where he was Treasurer. He attended The Friends School in Hobart as a boarder from 1924 to 1927. He applied for exemption as a conscientious objector based on his religious pacifism as a Quaker. He was ordered by the magistrate to perform non-combatant duties. When he refused, he was sentenced three months in prison, which he served at Long Bay and Emu Plains prisons. David became engaged to Ruth Mills after his release from prison on 18 February 1944. He was called up to enlist in the Allied Works Council (AWC). In July 1944, he was awaiting a summons for his failure to enlist. The outcome is unknown.
