Alan Blackman was from Mount Waverly in Victoria. He was a student and 22 years old. He applied for and was granted a full exemption as a conscientious objector by Magistrate WJ Maloney on 12 February 1970. Alan told the court hearing that “killing in any war or in any way is completely and utterly immoral. History has been to date, the tale of mass crime and murder”. Ralph further stated, “I would not take part in non-combatant duties because I would still be allowing myself to enter an organisation which is equipped for the purpose of killing”.
