Johnnie Best was from Wangaratta in Victoria. He was 20 years old and worked as a factory hand. He had developed an interest in Jehovah’s Witnesses and had attended meetings  since June 1968. Magistrate Humphries granted him full exemption from military duties at the court hearing in Wangaratta 13 May 1969.
