Further Information:
William Aukett was a school teacher from Parkside, South Australia. He made his application for full exemption from military duties two weeks after he began his basic training as a national serviceman at Puckapunyal Military Facility in Victoria. This was 29 January 1970. Magistrate Beerworth reserved his judgement. He did remark at the court hearing to all that “I am concerned that people holding these views are teachers”. He was also of the view that it was likely that William’s views were political rather than conscientious. Nevertheless, he granted William full exemption from military duties 20 April 1970.
