Further Information:
Kevin Anderson, aged twenty years, was a student of Macquarie University, New South Wales. He wrote a letter to Minister Snedden 23 February 1970. He informed that minister he was not going to register under the National Service Act (NSA) between 19 January and 2 February. He cited three reasons for his non-compliance. First it would acknowledge the government’s right to conscript. Second, it would acknowledge the right of the government to use the NSA as an instrument of war. Third, it would give implicit approval to the government’s foreign policy, especially in regard to the Vietnam War. He also said that if he registered he could not be morally accountable to himself. He stated he was aware of legal consequences that could follow his non-compliance. He indicated that he hoped to encourage other twenty-year olds to refuse to register for national service as he had. It appears he was not prosecuted under the NSA.
